Meeting the Cousin

The irritated pets were placed in the back of the mini-van by their owners. Katrina jumped around in the back, almost tearing apart the rear cargo area of the mini-van to the point that she (for a brief two seconds) attempted to walk on the ceiling. Stanley was having the time of his life. He found a bone, snuggled up, and watched Katrina as if she were his favorite TV program. Katrina continued to jump around, again and again.

Once she calmed down, Stanley joked, “Is that a dog acting like a cat I see out the window?” Katrina’s frantic rage initiated again. At one point, she had enough momentum to fly over the seat and out to the bottom cushion of the back seats. Trying to soar back over the seats, she ended up slipping over them. Stanley, gnawing on his bone, called, “Encore! Encore!”

Katrina was unamused and just plain mad. An aggressive meow was emitted as she flung herself at the rear window. The owner thought the sounds were from the noise of the road, so he adjusted the volume of the radio and kept on driving. Katrina was still flinging herself around making a flunking noise. FLUNK, FLUNK, FLUNK. Stanley watched like an engaged ping-pong spectator, his head bobbing from side to side with a swishing sound. FLUNK, SWISH, FLUNK, SWISH. The entertainment ended when the mini-van pulled into a large house’s driveway.

This house was new to the pets. Apparently, it was their owner’s sister’s house. Once Stanley and Katrina were allowed into the house and set free, they ran around like crazy. Yet, they were careful not to break anything–this was family. The pets ran upstairs and discovered their “cousin” (a human cousin) who was playing with a hamster that she guarded carefully. When Stanley and Katrina just sat there, the “cousin” backed up a little and announced that this was her Chinese dwarf hamster named Spark.

She put the hamster back in the cage and played with the dog and cat for a few minutes. She then declared, “I have to go downstairs to see my Aunt and Uncle,” and walked away.

Stanley and Katrina decided to approach Spark’s cage. “I like this cage. It is big, big, big! But not so big you that you could fit a cat in it because that would be too big, big, big. What are your names? I’m Spark. Reporting for duty, and at your service. Your wish is my command, Aye, Aye, Captain,” the hamster blabbed.

Katrina replied, “Your name is Spark Reporting for Action at Your Service Your Wish is my Command Aye Aye Captain?”

Spark smirked, “My name is Thehamster, Spark Thehamster. You could also call me Vermont Spark or Queen Spark the XXIV.”

Stanley said, “OOOKAY. We are going to see if the humans are giving out treats.”

“Goodbye, good luck, adios, the opposite of hi, safe travels, see you later, I’ll miss you so, say hi for me, adieu, farewell, bye-bye, ciao, cheerio, toodle-oo,” Spark chirped.

As they trotted down the stairs, the pets reflected on the energetic hamster.
